"Over the years, successive cleaning companies had failed to maintain the hardfloor surfaces at our school. Yes, the floors had been polished - but so had the dirt - layer upon layer of it. Dirt/polish dirt/polish to the point where the floors looked like they had been coated with a layer of thick, hard, brown varnish.
