Tips for Cleaning Windows That You Want To Do Yourself

First consider what your time is worth. We have had clients who have spent hours cleaning and still not achieved the desired result. Then consider your safety. High windows, slippery paths, the correct footwear and equipment are essential. Therefore make a smart decision.

If you have just build a new house, probably one of the most expensive items is the glass; this is why it’s important to look after the glass and maintain it.

The right way is to get the glass cleaned on a regular basis every three to four months.

Glass is porous and it can absorb dirt and minerals. A build-up can occur on the glass and when this happens, it will ruin the appearance.

So avoid having extra water splash on to your windows.

Home Made Window Cleaning Solution

When making your own window cleaning solution never combine an acid with an alkaline. Using an alkaline and acid will just cause a neutralising effect and you'll be right back where you started; with plain water. This means never mix vinegar with ammonia.

You can collect rain water or purchase distilled water to make your cleaning solution. This clean and pure water will be the prime ingredient of your cleaning solution. Rain water and distilled water is demineralised and this will make your window cleaning job easier.

Your cleaning solution needs some mild cleaning detergent. Use a small amount of dish cleaning soap so that you have somewhat soapy water.

Warm water will help with the cleaning process, but it will also evaporate the liquid. So on a warm day, do not use a warm solution.

You may need to adjust your cleaning solution to the type of dirt that needs to be removed. At times vinegar, ammonia, alcohol, and various other solvents may be necessary to clean a spot. But for most normal cleaning jobs, a mild detergent mixed with clean water will be the best. If the water is demineralised, then this will make your job even easier.

If your windows have a lime or mineral build-up, then vinegar will help. You can use up to 100% vinegar if needed and to speed the process, warm the vinegar up before applying. Don’t bother scrubbing but just let the vinegar react with the minerals. Do not let the vinegar dry out. After treatment rise your windows and then clean again with normal window cleaning solution.

Window Cleaning Equipment

1. Squeegee

A good quality squeegee is an absolute must. The best size is around 35 cm wide. This size will work well on most windows and once you have mastered this size, you can move to a larger one to make the job easier and faster.

2. Scrubber

A scrubber is used to wet and clean the window before using the squeegee. If you don’t want to run out and get a scrubber, you can use a good natural sponge instead.

3. Bucket

Have an appropriate sized bucket to hold the window cleaning solution.

4. Rag or Chamois and Microfiber

It is a good idea to use dry rag or chamois for drying the squeegee rubber blade and edges of glass. A microfiber cloth is great for touching up the glass.

5. Scraper

You may need a scraper to remove paint or other stubborn debris.

6. Extension Pole

You will need an extension pole of you have high, or hard-to-reach windows. You can get an extension pole made for a squeegee – this will allow you to stand on the ground and reach the high windows without a ladder.

When to Clean

It is best to clean your windows on a cloudy day as direct sunlight will dry the cleaning solution and cause lots of streaks. If you must clean on a sunny day then start as early in the morning as possible.

Preparation

Before you start cleaning the windows, wipe off all excess dirt - all that dust just turns into mud once water is introduced and the windows become harder to clean. Once you have dusted, use a hose to spray the windows and then spray on your window cleaning solution.

Window Cleaning Process

Wet your window with the scrubber and when the window is wet, scrub the dirt off. You'll feel the rough patches when the window is not yet clean. This is a step most people fail at getting right. If the window simply isn't clean; it's not going to look good so scrub well.

Take the squeegee and place it at the top of the window then pull down smoothly. Dry your squeegee blade between each sweep. Finish the window, if need be do one last sweep left to right at the bottom of the window.

Take a dry, clean cloth and run with your finger down each window side and across the bottom to clean and dry the edges. They should look great.
